Jeff Gillette is known for his provocative paintings that combine Disney characters with dystopian landscapes filled with slums and landfills. His works mix 20th-century cartoon illustration with traditional European oil painting techniques, using art to critique the global economic disparities perpetuated by 21st-century capitalism.
Gillette’s subversive style gained significant attention with his 2010 solo exhibition Dismayland, which influenced Banksy’s 2015 apocalyptic theme park installation of the same name. Banksy featured Gillette’s Minnie Hiroshima (2015) as the official poster for Dismaland and invited him to exhibit alongside artists like Damien Hirst and Jenny Holzer. Drawing on his experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in India and Nepal, Gillette’s works have been showcased in Los Angeles, London, and Singapore.
